What Does It Heal?

Toenail fungus and fungal infections of the toenail can be extremely difficult to treat. Yeast and fungus germs like to live in damp, moist places like socks and shoes. Because of this, toenail fungus infections can recur quickly and easily without more advanced fungal treatment. Unfortunately, topical nail solutions, creams and other treatments don’t always do the trick -- especially for advanced cases of toenail fungus.

Podiatry Associates uses the PinPointe™ FootLaser® system to get results for difficult or resistant cases like these which require a more thorough treatment.

About The
PinPointe™ FootLaser®

Toenail fungus, or onychomycosis can worsen when patients fail to treat it early on. In the beginning stages, toenail fungus might manifest as thick, brittle and yellowed toenails.

When discoloration happens, many people try to hide it by wearing nail polish or socks. These efforts can further exacerbate the issue. Trying to hide the issue, or treating it with home remedies, doesn’t always cure toenail fungus. It may even lead to nail loss, discomfort, and nail bed infection.

Treatment isn’t always quick and easy. Topical OTC and prescription creams take weeks to months to treat onychomycosis and have lower cure rates. Additionally, continued contact with the source of the problem may lead to the toenail fungus coming back.

The PinPointe™ FootLaser® treatment is the first FDA approved laser treatment for onychomycosis. Quick and painless laser treatment gets to the source of the problem. Treatment typically takes 30-60 minutes, and it effectively kills all fungus at the time of treatment.

What Are the Advantages
of PinPointe™ FootLaser®

The PinPointe™ FootLaser® treatment has been studied and approved for use by the FDA. This makes it a preferable option compared to topical or oral medication for those living with onychomycosis. There are several options of ways to care for toenail fungus:

  • Topical Medication: while topical medication has a low risk for drug allergies and drug side effects, it also has the lowest success rate
  • Oral Medication: has a higher success rate, but also carries systemic drug risks such as severe allergies, hepatitis, liver failure, and it requires a blood test
  • Laser Treatment: this is the only treatment option that has both a high success rate and low risk
  • No Treatment: delay in treatment may lead to a risk of developing more severe fungal nail infections, deformity, and pain. There could a risk of medication failure or a need for more medications later
  • Surgery: May be necessary for the most severe onychomycosis

The PinPointe™ FootLaser® also treats the following conditions associated with fungal growth of the toenail and other podiatry issues:

  • Onychomycosis
  • Yeast infections of the nail
  • Brittle, discolored and deformed toenails caused by fungus

Laser therapy has vast future potential in many areas of the medical field. However, the Pinpointe™ FootLaser® is specifically made for providing safe, effective treatment for onychomycosis and other fungal podiatry issues.

Does getting the PinPointe™ FootLaser® treatment hurt?

No, the laser treatment does not hurt and requires minimal downtime. Some patients might experience minor discomfort, but most do not.

What is the success rate for PinPointe™ FootLaser® Treatment?

Clinical trials have shown that The PinPointe™ FootLaser® has an average success rate of 70-80%. This is much higher than many topical creams used to treat toenail fungus.

Will I need to do anything before my treatment?

Before your treatment, you will need to remove any nail polish you might have on your toenails. This will include clear nail polish.

How many PinPointe™ FootLaser® treatments will I need before my toenail fungus clears up?

Your toenails will not look clear immediately after treatment because the fungal infection will have taken its toll on the existing keratin. However, after the first treatment, you can expect your existing fungus nail changes to gradually clear up, and as your nail grows out, the discoloration should also grow out.  A minority of patients treated will fail to resolve.

How soon after my treatment can I wear nail polish again?

Most people will be able to wear nail polish directly after their treatment. However, your doctor may recommend waiting to monitor the progress of the treatment.
